SERETSE ON THE OCCASION OF THE COMMEMORATION OF WORLD CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY 15TH MARCH 2017 Good morning. Background 1. Today Botswana joins the rest of the world in commemorating World Consumer Rights Day. This day was first observed on the 15th March 1983, twenty one (21) years after the declaration of consumer rights by John F. Kennedy who was the President of the United States of America then. Botswana started commemorating this day with the rest of the world in 1992 and this is her 25th year. In commemorating this day, consumers worldwide join together in solidarity to reflect upon the challenges they face in the market place as well as lobby for corrective action. Theme 1. The theme for commemoration of the consumer rights day is released by Consumers International (CI) which is the world federation of consumers, whose objective is to encourage consumers to form robust consumer groups that can effectively articulate the interests of the consumers. This year’s theme is â€Å"Consumer Rights in the Digital Age†. Studies have shown that in this digital age there is rapid change that reflects well over 3 billion, or 40% of the world’s population is online now, compared with just 1% in 1995, with all projections suggesting this number will continue to rise. 2.
